On Saturday, October 19th, Oregon Buddhist Temple Sangha participated in Walk To Feed The Hungry, as the part of Buddhist Global Relief. Buddhist Global Relief projects are designed to provide direct food aid to people afflicted by hunger and malnutrition, to promote ecologically sustainable agriculture, to support the education of girls and women, and to give women an opportunity to start right livelihood projects to support their families. On the local level, some of the donations from this walk was donated to Oregon Food Bank.
Our Sangha joined the other participants at Portland Friends of the Dhamma Center in southeast Portland. 6 religious practitioners from various Buddhist groups in Portland gave short messages in the beginning, and led the walk.
Friends of the Dhamma members had bagged some food donated by local sponsors, which we took to the walk, and distributed as needed.
The Saturday afternoon was mostly dry and warm. It was a meaningful time to walk together with people from various Buddhist groups. As we walked, we shared the hope to end the hunger in the world, we were all reminded of the importance of compassion.
